TOBEY WASTE

Tobey Waste was built from seven generations of the Tobey family who have run and evolved the company into a rubbish removal, recycling business, and waste energy plant.  The waste removal business blossomed from Hyannis, Cape Cod and rapidly expanded across New England. It is privately owned and continues to pass down the company within the Tobey family.The Tobey name has an extensive history in the waste removal business. What began as a wheelbarrow rubbish removal service transformed into a horse and buggy service then evolved into the most modern of trucking equipment.

The survival of a minority owned and operated business began with George B. Washington in 1865 as he settled on Cape Cod in Hyannis in a neighborhood called Happy Hollow. George used his four foot long wheel barrel to start the first waste company Washington Garbage Removal. After 5 years, his son George T. Washington joined his dad and helped to expand the garbage company to include trash removal through burying trash and having garbage fed to the hogs on his farm in West Hyannisport Massachusetts. In the next generation, George T. Washington’s Daughter married Eugene Tobey who was a Native American from Mashpee. Their son Lawrence S Tobey, Sr. joined his grandfather and evolutionized the company’s equipment from horse and wagons, to horse and buggy, and then to trucks/front end loaders. This change was crucial in expanding the business to include local businesses and residential customers! Washington trucking has transformed from the original model of the wheelbarrow into the industrial era of trucking.

The sons of Lawrence S Tobey then changed the name to All-Cape Disposal, Inc. DBA Tobey’s. As the eldest son of the family is the leader of the company which led Sonny to take ownership of All Cape Disposal. Creating the containerized service Sonny, the eldest son of Lawrence S. Tobey SR., took over and he ran the company as the head and gave his brother equal distributions of the company to delegate.Ultimately, Sonny Tobey, president of All-Cape Disposal, Inc., took a vision and brought it into reality. This was fully executed by developing a waste-to-energy treatment facility to get ahead of the industry for facilitating waste the first to use the front end load can system. Sonny put his facility in motion by having his brothers, George Tobey and Nathaniel Tobey, approach the towns of Cape Cod and sign up the waste that would come from each town. With the approval of each town, this waste is then brought to the waste-to-energy plant under a contractual long term basis that would feed the waste-to-energy plant the tonnage needed to operate.

 The driving force behind Sea Mass waste-to-energy facility in Rochester Mass was an idea that evolved into a business. Shortly after putting the facility in motion, Lawrence “Sonny”, George, Nathaniel, and Edward “Hawkeye” became successful in obtaining help from I.B.J. (International Bank Of Japan) along with signing towns from the Cape Cod area and modest tipping fees to ensure the project would go forward and become prosperous. Sonny then delegated Nat the responsibility of the Transportation Division to haul waste to the energy facility and assigned the operations of the business to his brother George. As his brothers took on those roles, Sonny and Eddy dealt with the day to day operations of Tobey Waste. This brought them all together to generate the first waste-to-energy plant.

Thus the Tobey family brought the Cape Cod trash business into the Green Revolution of today, another FIRST for Cape Cod.

Today Bryan Tobey, son of Sonny Tobey, is the seventh generation to take on the family business. Bryan is the CEO of Tobey Waste & Recycling, Tobey Trucking, and Douglas Iron. The sister companies continues to be run and managed by the family with high regards of yesteryears support from all family members. Tobey Waste continues the family Legacy in servicing many different customers ranging in all aspects of construction, restaurants, and municipal waste in the community.
